A Letter to Mr Abbott (T.G.E – Part 9 of 40)

The Escape Plan

I have been asked by Kim and Jason to take part in their Adultitis Escape Plan, a 40-day plan to become more childlike (not childish)
and to reduce stress and prevent dullness, depression and [insert
another word beginning with 'd' here]. Of course I’m gonna do it.

Dreary-ness, that begins with ‘D’.

The ninth task: Do one thing today to support a cause or issue you really care about.

Today (well, yesterday… sorry), I wrote a letter to Tony Abbott, our Federal Minister for Health and Ageing. Mr Abbott is well known (in Australia anyway) as having strong views against abortion, and lots of people (well, maybe lots, I’m not sure, but they are very vocal) don’t like the fact that he has beliefs different to theirs and happens to be in a position where those beliefs can affect public policy.

I’m very much against abortion (it’s a horrible thing to kill a child), and so I wrote a letter to Mr Abbott encouraging him to not cave in on his views, that people voted him in to office knowing what those views were, and that there are at least some people who think he’s doing the right thing in promoting options to abortion.

RodeoClown: hates the idea of killing a baby because you don’t feel like having it.

i hyave a question, and dont get me wrong, i’m totally against abortion on all levels, but what do you say to a woman whose fallen pregnant thru circumstances like rape?
spanna has her thoughts but she’s obviously never been in that situation, but its an issue that we sadly have to face

Hi Annelise, that’s a fair enough question.

The vast majority of abortions have nothing to do with rape, and everything to do with women having sex with men they don’t want to have babies with, or men having sex with women and then forcing them to have an abortion when they get pregnant. It is very rare that a woman who is raped gets pregnant (most of the time the rapist does not actually leave any sperm in the woman). I can dig up the research on this if you want, or you can just take my word for it.

That being said, I think in that case that the individual situation should be taken into account, but I still don’t think it’s right that a child should be killed because of the father’s wrongdoing. I can understand why the mother may want an abortion, but I think they should still be given the option to not.

Also, I’ve turned off markdown (the thing that let you use underscores etc to make things italics). Just use the buttons at the top of the comment box to do it now.

Hi,

Here goes……

I feel VERY VERY VERY strongly about this issue.

I was adopted by my parents whe I was about 3-4 weeks old. I would like to start by saying that I love my parents both very much and wouldn’t trade them for anything.

A few years ago I watched a video by Pam Stenzel (I can’t link to her website but it is http://www.pamstenzel.com) Anyway long story short her mother was raped and as a result she was born. If you can ever hear her speak or watch a video of hers I recommend it.

Anyway, what I realised from that video is what it must have been like for my biological mum (bio mum)to carry me for nine months knowing that she was going to give me away to a better life.

My bio mum wasn’t raped, her and her boyf were only young and realised that they weren’t ready for kids but rather than taking the “easy” option (I realise it is not an easy choice but for the sake of the arguement. No intention to offend) She LOVED ME ENOUGH to carry me for 9 months KNOWING that she was going to give me away.

Anyway watching that Pam Stenzel video was one of the most profound days of my life when I realised the LOVE she had for me. (Bio mum not Pam Stenzel!!)

These things have become even more real after having a child myself, well Lisa had her, but you know what I mean. I couldn’t imagine going through nine months of watching her grow and kick and move and be cute just to know that I would have to give her away.

I realise I am rambling a bit but the point I want everyone to realise is that if my bio mum had had an abortion I would not be here.

The issue of babies from rape is a curly one and again with no intention to offend anyone having never been in the situation myself, I think that I would take a fair bit of convincing that abortion if the best solution.

D!

Dez! Wouldn’t be here if his bio mum had an abortion
