Learning to Read
June 21st, 2006 · Posted in Uncategorized · 12 CommentsGot an excited phone call this morning whilst walking to work. Jen was ringing to announce that Mat had learned a whole bunch more letters in his alphabet book. Whilst sleeping.
Last night we went through the book and he could only identify a handful of letters (s, o, m, q, d), and this morning he showed Jen a whole big bunch more. Hooray!

He’s not tall enough to reach the light switch, so probably not

Good point.
For some unknown reason, Mat’s bedroom light is not in his bedroom – it’s around the corner in the living room – not even directly outside the door which I could understand.

He’s 2 (and 2 months).
He’s a pretty smart little kid, his speech is waaaay above normal for a 2 year old, he can throw together meaningful 10 word sentences and uses pretty large words appropriately.
He still doesn’t get ‘mine’ and ‘yours’ right though (“Matty have chicken nuggests for your dinner?” is a pretty common line from him).

We have real issues with feminine personal pronouns with our boys – ‘who’s he?’ they’ll say pointing to a woman….or ‘that’s his’, when it is really ‘hers’!!
Cute though. He is pretty amazing to know the alphabet at all, let alone recognise it at 2yrs.

Mat is not only 2 years and two months old, but today (22/6/06) he is 2 yrs, 2 mths and 2 DAYS old !!

Thanks for the addition Dez, Ruth – Mat also has that problem, I think he knows the difference, but he gets them muddled up sometimes. I think he asked what grandpa was going to have for her dinner the other night.

Yeah it’s a pretty common problem for a two year old, but it’s my four year old that has most of the difficulties with the concept!! It’s partly because we don’t have girls in the household (except me of course)
