The Zeitgeist Segue

October 10th, 2006 · Posted in Notes to Self ·

I use words that are too big…

I was changing topics last night at bible study and mentioned how smooth the segue (seg-way) occured - then I was verbally lambasted for having the audaciousness to use excessively Byzantine terminology when a more facile word would have proven intelligible to the current assemblage.

Then in my postliminary internet perusal I discover that the term ‘zeitgeist’ also exceeds the common vernacular. Well… sorry my vocabulary is overwraught and melodramatic. I’ll endeavour to use an unembellished lexicon henceforth.

RodeoClown: ostentatious.

You and me both, you and me both. It’s just like we’re in school again, made to feel badly because we’re paying attention and actually learning something.

Is it correct to define the word “the” using “the” in the definition?

Dictionary.com doesn’t use it in the initial definition (so just definite article), but then proceeds to use it in the elaboration.

I have no qualms using a word in it’s own definition when it is a foundational word for the entire language.

Hey do you remember any of those stupid things that you used to have on your pencil case… instead of saying “pride goes before the fall” you could say …

I don’t know what it said exactly, but I imagine it was something along the lines of: A supercilious predilection precedes swift negative acceleration.

Yeah it was something like that but about 3 time longer!! :)

There was another one too…?
