I guess they just look classier on the shelf, and as so many adults seem to be afraid of being thought of as childish, the cartoony covers are very off-putting. I have no qualms with watching cartoons and reading comics - I see them as just another medium (or large) - and it annoys me when people write them off simply because they used to watch childish cartoons when they were young. I remember reading that when they re-released the original few novels with the newer cover, they sold a whole bunch more.
