The Distressing Plight of Lady Toreth Hughes

July 11th, 2007 · Posted in Jokage · 13 Comments

I received correspondence today with one Lady Toreth Hughes, who apparently needs my help to get a large sum of money out of escrow.

She was so distraught she actually had multiple copies of the letter included in the email.

Poor dear had her husband explode in a Spanish train bombing while he was on the way to the doctor, she is unable to conceive a child for him probably due to her cancerous problems, and to top it all off, has had a stroke. Oh, and she is computer illiterate (despite having a Hong Kong-based personal email address).

Judging by her email address she is 32, she’s also a widow with vast tracts of land, so any of my young, single, male readers may want to contact her to help with her vow to uplift the down-trodden and potentially marry her and inherit her large estates in England when she finally succumbs to cancerous problems.

If you do win her hand, remember me come Christmas.

For your reading pleasure, I’ve included her email in full below the post.

Update: I’ve reduced it down to a single instance of the main message – she had a dozen or so before.

RodeoClown: a friend to Lady Toreth. Heh!

From: Lady Toreth Hughes
52 Oxford Street,
England.

Hello Friend,

Getting your contact was not an easy task because since I am not
computer literate, I ordered an expert to seek a fellow very far away
and he went to the institute of International Business to apply and he
 paid
them the charges.

I am Lady Toreth, married to Sir Richard Hughes an Englishman who is
dead; he died in a train bomb blast in Spain when he was going for his
medical check up in 2004.Please copy and paste this Internet link for
more information on the incident

When my late husband was alive he deposited a large sum of money in an
escrow account which were derived from his vast estates and investment
in capital market) with his bank here in UK.Presently, this money is
still with the Bank.

Recently, my Doctor told me that I have limited days to live due to the
cancerous problems I am suffering from. Though what bothers me most is
the stroke that I have in addition to the cancer.

I need you to help me in fulfiling my husband obligation which I am
presently unable to fulfil.

I will brief you more on your swift reply to my personal email address
on ladytorethhughes75@yahoo.com.hk.

Sincerely Yours,
Lady Hughes

I received an e-mail from this “Lady” and it indicates she was married to old Richard “three decades” By your calculations she was definitely a child bride! The e-mail follows:
Here writes Lady Toreth Hughes, suffering from cancerous ailment. I am
married to Sir Richard Hughes an Englishman who is dead. My husband was
into private practice all his life before his death. Our life together as
man and wife lasted for three decades without child. My husband died after
a
protracted illness. My husband and I made a vow to uplift the down-trodden
and the less-privileged individuals as he had passion for persons who can
not help themselves due to physical disability or financial predicament. I
can adduce this to the fact that he needed a Child from this relationship,
which never came. When my late husband was alive he deposited the sum of
20 Million (20 Million Great Britain Pounds Sterling which were derived
from his vast estates and nvestment in capital market) with his bank here
in UK. resently, this money is still with the Bank.

Recently, my Doctor told me that I have limited days to live due to the
cancerous problems I am suffering from. Though what bothers me most is the
stroke that I have in addition to the cancer. With this hard reality
that has befallen my family, and me I have decided to donate this fund to
you and want you to use this gift which comes from my husbands effort to
fund the upkeep of widows, widowers, orphans, destitute, the down-
trodden, physically challenged children, who prove to be genuinely
handicapped financially.

I took this decision because I do not have any child that will inherit
this money and my husband relatives are bourgeois and very wealthy persons
and I do not want my husband\’s hard earned money to be misused or
invested into ill perceived ventures. I do not want this money to be
misused hence the reason for taking this bold decision. I am not afraid of
death hence I
know where I am going.

As soon as I receive your reply I shall give you the contact of the bank
in UK. I will also issue you a Letter of Authority that will empower you
as the
original beneficiary of this fund. My happiness is that I lived a life
worthy of emulation. Please assure me that you will act just as I have
stated herein.Hope to hear from you soon.

(Comment: I happened to be adopted–something my folks did when they realized THEY couldn’t have children. Howcome the Hughes’ didn’t think of that? Also if anyone REALLY wants to do something to help the less fortunate, look at this website: http://www.livingtreekids.org)

I agree completely – if she is that interested in helping the children, why not just donate all the money to a charity that can help them…

But why are we arguing over the common sense of spammers? :S

I have received this e-mail as well. Over the last few years I have had similar ones manily from Africa offering me, which amounts to almost the national debit of all the counries in Africa.

My best one was supposed to have been from Emelda Marcus wife of the late former President of the Philippines. MY Wife is a Filipina and saw through this as Emelda Marcus has still plenty of money to live on.

I too received this letter and responded that due to having winning a couple of lotteries worth over 3 million this week and an inheritance from a Nigerian prince I would have to decline.

I received this ‘Lady Toreth’ email looking for someone to take this £20m burden off her hands. I replied knowing it was a scam after investigating the story on the web. I deleted the message contents as instructed. Today I received a letter saying I was listed as a beneficiary of £4.6m ‘in the intent of the deceased’. What bloody happened to the £15.4m? Also the mail had come from a gentleman with an address in Spain???

Dar, it’s not worth replying at all to emails like this – it merely lets the spammer know that they have a valid email address, and that they can keep sending spam to it.

It’s a very annoying situation.
