Your Improved Minesweeping Experience
April 23rd, 2009 · Posted in Nerdery · 3 CommentsI’ve been playing minesweeper on Windows Vista lately, and I have discovered an awesome new feature they have included, but have not made any mention of anywhere (that I can see).
You can’t get caught in a lose-lose situation.
I can’t prove this, but as far as I can tell, whenever you are in a situation where there is no way of clearing a space or marking a flag, no matter where you click next, you are guaranteed to not hit a mine. In previous versions of the game, the board was completely predetermined (past the first click at least – you weren’t (and still aren’t) able to hit a mine in your first move), so if you had two squares remaining and a single flag to plant, you had a 50% chance of winning or losing. No longer is the coin-flip win/loss an issue. This small addition removes so much unnecessary frustration. And even better – they didn’t even tell anyone they did it.
Is there anything you/me/we can do to improve something that won’t ever be noticed, but if we’d left it alone could cause frustration? Suggestions in the comments.

OK, first suggestion to kick things off:
Turn the toilet paper so it hangs over the front – makes it much easier to remove sheets from the roll.

I’m fascinated to discover if you are right here – I’ve been arguing for a while that there’s no reason for a game not to cheat in the player’s favour and the “Schroedinger’s Mine” story plays right into it… I shall keep my ear to the ground.
Thanks for the head’s up!

Hi Chris,
I’m 99% sure it’s there. I used to be quite hesitant in situations where there was no move to be deduced, but I’ve started being quite reckless* – just click anywhere and I haven’t hit a mine yet.
I used to think it would be a great addition to the game when I used to play, as losing due to luck is really, really frustrating.
I know in the last versions they had a simplified version of this where you could never hit a mine on your first click – which was better than some naive versions I’ve played where you can die on your first move (terrible design there).
*As reckless as you can be playing… minesweeper!
