Walking to Work

When walking to work from Central Station, check the map before commencing the walk. It’ll be quicker that way.

How Do I…?

Figure out why the bullet points in the men’s convention notes only work some of the time.

RodeoClown: apologises for the inconvenience.

Convicted

March 8th, 2006 · Posted in Notes to Self · 4 Comments

It sucks when you are convinced that what you are doing is wrong. Espescially when you are at the penultimate episode of a series.

For later reference, the next episodes in each series that I have yet to watch are:

  • Smallville - Season 5 ep 16
  • 24 - Season 5 ep 10
  • Battlestar Galactica - Season 2 ep 19 (page 81 Penny Arcade forums)
  • Lost - Season 2 ep 16 (page 55 Penny Arcade forums)

I guess I’ll have more free time now…

RodeoClown: repentant.

Note to Apple

March 12th, 2006 · Posted in Notes to Self · Comments Off

Why can’t I buy stuff from the USA iTunes music store?

I want to buy the last two episodes of Battlestar Galactica.
I want to give you my money.

This is reason number 2 why people pirate.

Reason number 1.

I (Still) Hate Channel 7

April 2nd, 2006 · Posted in Notes to Self · 1 Comment

Did I mention that I hate channel 7?
I don’t even watch TV anymore, and I still hate them. Especially when they spam my blog.

I hate channel 7.

RodeoClown: really hates channel 7.

If I link to this comic here, I can delete the comic from my RSS reader.
This is possibly the funniest comic I’ve read for some time.

RodeoClown: you’re not invited!

What’s the Worst?

September 7th, 2006 · Posted in Notes to Self · 10 Comments

What’s the worst thing you could say to a homeless person who asks how your day has been?

Probably something along the lines of “It will be good to get home”.

RodeoClown: insensitive.

Bible Searches in Firefox

September 13th, 2006 · Posted in God Stuff, Notes to Self · 2 Comments

A quick tip if you want to do a bible search in firefox, create a new bookmark to http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=%s
and give it a keyword like bible.

Now any time you want to do a quick bible reference you can just type it into your address bar like so:
bible romans 3:10

And it will link you to the verses you wanted.

RodeoClown: found it.

The Zeitgeist Segue

October 10th, 2006 · Posted in Notes to Self · 15 Comments

I use words that are too big…

I was changing topics last night at bible study and mentioned how smooth the segue (seg-way) occured - then I was verbally lambasted for having the audaciousness to use excessively Byzantine terminology when a more facile word would have proven intelligible to the current assemblage.

Then in my postliminary internet perusal I discover that the term ‘zeitgeist’ also exceeds the common vernacular. Well… sorry my vocabulary is overwraught and melodramatic. I’ll endeavour to use an unembellished lexicon henceforth.

RodeoClown: ostentatious.

Automatic Automatic Teller Machine Machine

October 31st, 2006 · Posted in Notes to Self · Comments Off

You know how people get eyes rolling when they talk about the ATM-machine?

There probably exists an ATM machine, and in all probability, it could be automated. A giant machine that lays cash vending machines like eggs, ready to hatch and feed upon plastic cards.

It’s probably just an assembly line manned by cheap workers somewhere, but I like to believe in a gargantuan robot, spawning window-mounted currency-dispensing automatons. These micro-machines can transform and join forces to create an evil master banking robot that fights those opposed to fee increases and defends the rights of shareholders from the attacks of petty customers who want ease of use and free access to their own money

OK, now I’m just getting silly.

Why should I think to access my money for free…

RodeoClown: the title has a great rhythm.

A Man of Unclean Lips

November 1st, 2006 · Posted in Notes to Self · 5 Comments

I’m not a particularly sweary man, but lately I’ve found myself using disgusting language and it has just been jumping forth from my mouth.

It’s not when anyone else is around, but when I’m angry and alone.

6The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

7All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, 8but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

9With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. 11Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

- James 3:6-12 (New International Version)

RodeoClown: working on words.

If B1 ate B2…

If bananas cost an arm and a leg, is eating them comparable to canibalism?

RodeoClown: craving.

110%. Or More!

May 1st, 2007 · Posted in Attention: Whoever, Notes to Self · Comments Off

What gets the most out of me? Respect. Trust. Confidence. When someone expresses confidence in me, shows trust, shows respect, that is when I feel the most driven to give 110% or more.

-Dan Phillips, Glimpse into the psyche of a half-decent guy (for the ladies)

Most people will try and exceed your expectations of them. Expect them to fail, and they’ll do it spectacularly. Expect greatness, and they’ll do their best to meet it.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t work if you expect greatness for twenty minutes, and then give up. That kind of flip-flopping will more than likely provide the exact opposite response.

In the comments of Dan’s post, “Kim” wrote the following:

I learned the hard way that when I express doubt in my husband, he figures there’s no pleasing, so why bother. Showing trust and confidence does indeed work much better.

Ladies, that pretty much sums up we men. We’ll take the easiest route every time. If putting in extra effort gains us no benefit*, next time we won’t bother.

Lads, take note - even if she doesn’t seem to notice, try and put in the hard yards. If you can give your woman a reason to encourage you, hopefully she’ll start doing it more often, in response you will try even harder - and then you can start a positive feedback loop, and eventually explode with encouragement and achievement**.

Excuses of “s/he didn’t, so I won’t” don’t cut it. It’s hard work, but worth it.

RodeoClown: reinforcing positively

*Benefits can include a smile, encouraging words, lasagne, and more!
**That’s probably a good thing…
